The phase 1 of the FAW Truck Assembly Plant is located on an site of approximately 8,68 Ha in the Coega IDZ, Zone 2 – Automotive Cluster. The site was selected due to its prominent visibility along the N2 national road and the potential it held for future expansion.FAW approached several of the largest construction companies in South Africa to tender for this project on a Construction and Utility Engineering Turnkey Project basis. All bids were designed around the same spatial requirements of FAW Vehicles Manufacturers SA (Pty) Ltd. as set out in their Request for Proposal (RFP) documentation and predetermined site utilisation layouts, calling for a facility that would have a production capacity of 5 000 medium- and heavy-commercial vehicles per year. The design and bid process initiated during mid-2012 and construction commenced in December 2012. The facility was publicly opened by president Jacob Zuma in May 2014.
Phase 1 of the development consists of a new assembly plant together with its related supportive and complimentary facilities amongst other a highly visible Truck Pavilion. The said pavilion acts as a visitor portal, introducing patrons to the history of FAW from its inception in China in 1956 up to its short but rich footprint in the South African market.
The architectural language is one of contemporary distinction where lines were kept clean and deliberate – celebrating and embracing its primary purpose. A stepped roof was designed to ensure natural light penetration from the building's sides to the core of the building.
Both the Exhibition Pavilion and the Office Block make use of unifying roofing elements in the form of seemingly horizontal floating structures. Curvilinear shapes suggest a dynamic yet structured / formalised movement pattern which relates to the development’s position next to the N2 national road (structured yet dynamic) and could be used in future phases or new facilities to reinforce FAW’s branding.
